“Sturmgeschütze sind das Rückrat der Infanterie”. Dieser Grundsatz ist dem Merkblatt 18 b/38 “Panzer helfen Dir” (Was der Grenadier vom gepanzerten Kampffahrzeug wissen mu?) entnommen, das am 15. September 1944 von der Ausbildungsabteilung (II) im Generalstab beim Oberkommando des Heeres herausgegeben wurde. Welche Absicht man dort mit der Herausgabe des Merkblattes verfolgt hat, ist im Geleitwort formuliert:
“Diese Schrift soll dazu beitragen, jedem Soldaten und jedem deutschen Jungen das Wesen der schlagkr?ftigsten und modernsten Waffen des Heeres aufzuzeigen”. Teil der Waffe waren die gepanzerten Selbstfahrlafetten für Sturmgeschütz 7,5-cm-Kanone, der Einfachheit halber Sturmgeschütz genannt. Zum Zeitpunkt der Herausgabe des Merkblattes 18 b/38 verfügte die Sturmartillerie in ihren 40 Abteilungen und Brigaden über einen Istbestand von 1200 Sturmgeschützen und - haubitzen. Ende Dezember 1940, ein reichliches Jahr nach Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkrieges, waren es gerade einmal 150 Sturmgeschütze gewesen, die in einer Sturmgeschützabteilung und mehreren selbstst?ndigen Batterien zum Einsatz kamen. Was waren die Gründe für den kometengleichen Aufstieg dieser Waffe bis zum Sommer 1944?

But the worst villain of the book is the politically powerful food industry, which, the authors say, plies us with cheap fat and sugar while keeping healthier foods scarce and expensive, bribes schools to sell children soft drinks, and bombards children with junk-food ads from the moment they leave the womb. The authors recast the usual diet-and-exercise discourse in the rhetoric of social justice, calling for a grass-roots mobilization to fight Big Food, a “national strategic plan,” and specific measures like junk-food taxes and banning ads that target children. Libertarians may consider this the worst kind of victimology. But the evergreen subject of American gluttony and sloth brings out the best in scientist-advocates, and the authors, while drawing on a mountain of statistics and studies, make their indictment both funny and appalling.
